SRE mindset drills that do not rely on fictional heroics
We give candidates a one-page incident timeline with missing pieces. The exercise measures curiosity: do they ask clarifying questions before proposing fixes? Do they acknowledge uncertainty? We score empathy alongside technical guesses.
Another drill asks them to translate a dense metric query into a sentence a product manager would repeat accurately. If they cannot, we know where mentoring should start.
We explicitly avoid puzzles designed to trip people up. The scenarios mirror messy realities—ambiguous ownership, stale dashboards, conflicting runbooks—because that is the job.
Hiring managers receive a rubric, not a transcript, so decisions stay structured and comparable across interviews.
